This article states research strongly indicates that individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) benefit from interaction with animals by having improved social behavior and interaction.

This specific HABRI-funded study explored the effects of pet dogs on families with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  This study not only noted several positive benefits of family function because of these pet dogs, it also showed their findings to be consistent with previous studies, which found different health benefits when assistance dogs (not pet dogs) were introduced into the families of children with ASD.  Read the article for more details of the positive impact dogs have on children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
